1. Pre-project stage
First you need to have a vision, what to achieve. Someone, somewhere, at a point-of-time has an idea or a need. This can be a business opportunity or something that is necessary to do for the company (e.g., a change of a processor to a faster one). This idea or need is the trigger for the vision, and project.
1.1. Give mandate
The first step normally taken is creating a project mandate document. The project mandate is the trigger for the project. A project mandate can be a simple one-pager or just an email, structured to give a mandate for a specific action. The mandate is given by a company executive, that is “corporate management”, for the freshly nominated project manager.--> documents: project mandate

1.2. Get started
Now we have initiated the “starting up a project” – process. The main objective of this process is to verify that the project is worthwhile. The project mandate is expanded to a project brief, and an initiation stage plan is created. Also, the sketch of the business case document is created. Starting up a project process is also about justifying the project and the proposal may also be rejected.--> documents: project brief, business case, initiation stage plan

1.3. Make proposal
After this process is complete, the steering group reviews the project brief and decides whether to initiate the project. To proceed, the project must be “viable and worthwhile”. This is the first decision that the project board takes.--> decision to initiate the project
2. Initiate project
Here we go! Project has the mandate from corporate management to proceed. It is time to set up the project organisation and development processes and start refining specs and other documents. Good luck!
